Earth Day 2015 is Wednesday, April 22, 2015. It is a worldwide annual event held to support the protection of our environment. Started in 1970, the event is organized by the Earth Day Network and more than 192 countries celebrate the day and the week each year. At a UNESCO Conference in 1969 in San Francisco, California, peace activist John McConnell proposed the event to honor the earth we live in. The first Earth Day was celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring. But today’s Earth Day was later founded by United States senator Gaylord Nelson and celebrated on April 22 starting in 1970 as a way to teach about the earth. Since 1990, the event is now celebrated worldwide.
Since going worldwide, the event promotes environmental issues including recycling, promote earth summits such as the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, focus on global warming and push for clean energy. More than 5,000 environmental groups in 192 countries reach out to millions of people to promote causes that could help to save the planet earth. Multitude of mediums including paper, television, Internet and others promotes the event to raise awareness on multitude of topics.
