The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has recently announced that India will be the host for World Environment Day with the theme being “Forests: Nature at your Service”.  Of course, this year the focus will be on the relationships between forests and the population around it.

Since India’s reputation in this area is notorious for overgrazing which leads to desertification, the UNEP has now elected the Indian government to host this day because in developing a tree-planting system, they are also moving towards a green system.

And despite the fact that the world loses about 13 million hectares of forest every year, India is not only making an effort to prevent land degradation but is also planning one of the largest green energy projects in the world that will not only generate 3000 megawatts from wind farms but also 20000 megawatts of solar energy.

And if that’s not enough, the Indian government is now providing subsidies for those businesses that use green technology apart from setting up a foundation by which one can manage land as well as conserve water, it’s no surprise that the UNEP has selected India to be where the next World Environment Day takes place as well as it has taken clear steps to introduce a Clean Energy Fund into its budget.

Along with this announcement with India hosting the World Environment Day this week, it has also been discussed that the year of 2011 will be called the International Year of Forests.
