The benefits and disadvantage of memory foam mattresses

Written by Foam Factory, Inc.

Sleep is probably the most important activity when it comes to general health and well-being. One element that has an outsized effect on quality of sleep is the mattress. Memory foam, developed in the 1960’s by NASA is a popular mattress material. In this article we will look at the benefits and the disadvantages of using a memory foam bed:

Benefits

When sleeping on a memory foam mattress, the foam alters the shape to fit your body based on body heat. This provides support for the body along its natural lines and curves. There are claims that this promotes more restful sleep and relieves pain. None of these claims are backed by research at this point. This is mostly due to the fact that sleep is extremely subjective and is difficult to quantify.

Disadvantages

The biggest disadvantage is that memory foam tends to retain body heat. This might make it more uncomfortable during the hot weather or in tropical climates. This will not be a problem with any kind of air conditioning or climate control.

The neatest feature of memory is that when there is no longer any weight on the mattress, it restores itself to the original shape. That means that the queen size memory foam mattress on your bed will go back to its natural shape sometime after you wake up.
