The
largest bird in the world is the ostrich, standing 8 ft. tall and
weighing about 300 lbs. Ostriches
are now only found in southern Africa, zoos and ostrich farms. The emu
is the second largest bird.
The largest extinct bird is the Australian Dromornis or Thunderbird, an
ostrich type bird that was 10 ft.
(3m) tall and weighed 1000 lbs. The tallest extinct bird is the Giant
Moa of New Zealand at 3.7m (12 ft.).
The largest wingspans on a bird are the Albatross and White Pelican with
wingspans of 12 ft. (3.6m).
The smallest bird is the bee hummingbird at 5.7cm (2.24 in.) and 1.6 g
(0.056 oz). |
