Blue Marble Zoo Facts |
It is
estimated there are currently over 1,500 zoos worldwide.
Based on the most animals housed in a zoo, the largest zoos in the world
are the Berlin Zoo,
with 13,000 animals, the NY Bronx Zoo with 6,000 animals, the San Diego
Zoo with 4,000 animals,
and the Pretoria Zoo with 3,500 animals.
The Vienna Zoo (Schonbrunn Palace) is considered the oldest zoo in the
world. The Vienna Zoo
opened to visitors in 1752, and has kept over 35 elephants in the zoo
since 1772. The second oldest
zoo in the world is the London Zoo which opened in 1828. The London Zoo
housed a collection of
exotic animals that were studied by eminent scientists of the day. Only
later, in 1847, did the
London Zoo open to the public. Among many world firsts, the London Zoo
opened the first reptile
house (1849), first public aquarium (1853), first insect house (1881),
and the first children's zoo (1938).
The Berlin Zoo opened in 1841.
The oldest zoo in the United States is the Philadelphia Zoo, which was
opened on July 1, 1874.
The Cincinnati Zoo opened in 1875, and the Bronx Zoo opened in 1889.
Pre-dating the Philadelphia
Zoo was the Zoological Society of Philadelphia which was chartered in
1859, the same year
that Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace were presenting their
independently derived
theories of evolution in London, England. |

The
Singapore Zoological Gardens - Featuring the 'Open Zoo' Concept

|
The
Singapore Zoological Gardens
was founded by the late Dr Ong
Swee Law. In the late 1960s, Dr Ong,
the then Chairman of the Public
Utilities Board (PUB) felt that some
of the forested catchment areas
adjoining the reservoirs, which came
under PUB's purview, should be made
more accessible to the public.
Eventually, the idea of a zoo arose.
With the Government's financial
support, and after almost six years
of hard work, the Singapore
Zoological Gardens finally opened
its gates to guests on 27 June 1973. |
|
The
Singapore Zoo is a model of the
`open zoo' concept. Animals are kept
in spacious, landscaped enclosures,
separated from visitors by dry or wet
moats. The moats are concealed with
vegetation or dropped below view.
In the case of dangerous animals
such as leopards and jaguars which
climb very well, moat barriers are not
used. Instead, animals are housed in
beautifully landscaped glass-fronted
enclosures. Oppressive cages which
typify old zoos, are absent. The end
result is a feeling of openness. |
|
It
is important for zoos to exhibit
animals in enclosures which simulate
their natural habitats. This aspect of
zoo design is not only important to
the well-being of the animals, it also
helps visitors understand how the
animals live in the wild. When
constructing a new exhibit, the land
has to be first shaped. Carefully
selected trees, shrubs, creepers,
ferns and grass are used to simulate
the environment. Rocks, logs and the
element of water are essential for
effect and aesthetics. |

Proverbs
to Live By
Good nature,
like a bee,
collects honey
from every herb,
and ill nature,
like the spider,
sucks poison from
the sweetest flower.
