The
largest sea animal is the blue
whale. The blue whale is also the
world's largest animal. In fact the
blue whale is likely the largest
animal that ever lived on earth,
exceeding the size of the largest
known dinosaurs. Blue whales
can grow to over 100 feet, and
weigh over 150 tons. The stunning
undersea blue whale image to
the left was taken off the coast
of California by Mike Johnson. |
The
largest fish is the whale shark at 15 - 18 m (50-60 ft.) in length, and
weighing over 10 tons.
The largest freshwater fish is the white sturgeon, with specimens
recorded in excess of 600 pounds.
Giant squid are the largest cephalopod (octopus, cuttlefish, squid) and
the largest mollusk.
The largest recorded giant squid was 59 feet long. The average size of
the giant squid is 20 to 43
feet long, and between 110 and 660 pounds. |

Did You Know?
Whales are the largest living creatures on earth, and the the longest living
animal on earth.
Recent scientific studies suggest some larger whale species
live over 200 years.
The killer whale or Orca is actually the largest member of
the dolphin family.
Dolphins have saved people at sea,
and helped sailors since ancient times. There are many species
and sizes
of sharks, including
hammerhead sharks and tiger sharks. Unlike whales and dolphins
sharks
are a species of fish, whereas whales and
dolphins are mammals. Sharks are pre-historic and
swam the oceans during the dinosaur era. |
