rivers follow closely behind. They are the
Amazon in
South America at 4,000 miles ( 6,440 km ), the Yangtze
( Chang Jiang ) in China at 3915

The largest lake in the world is the
Caspian Sea in
SW Asia. The Caspian is 152,000
sq. miles ( 393,900m ),
and is almost five times larger than the 2nd largest,
Lake
Superior at 31,800 sq. miles ( 82,400 sq. km ). The
Caspian is an inland saltwater lake,
however Superior
is a freshwater lake, making it the world's largest
freshwater lake. The
4 next biggest lakes are between
22,000 - 26,000 sq. miles. They are Lake
Victoria in
Africa ( fresh ), Aral Sea ( salt ) in Western Asia, and
the freshwater Great Lakes;
Lake Huron, and
Lake Michigan.

The regions where the ocean plates disappear into
the earth's mantle are called
subduction zones, and
are marked by deep ocean trenches. The deepest is
the
Mariana
Trench in the southern Pacific Ocean
( Philippine Sea ), which is 36,197 ft ( 11,033m )
deep, or more than 7,000 ft ( 2,100m ) deeper than
Mount Everest is high.

Caves are made from underground water erosion,
which then become enlarged by rock
falls. In January
2001, a team of 11 cave explorers from the Ukraine,
claim to have located the deepest cave on Earth.
The cave was found in a massive piece of limestone
in Asia's
Caucasus Mountains in Georgia. The cave is
4,700 feet
deep. This new find exceeds the former
deepest cave in Austria by 250 feet. There are deep
caves
located worldwide. Spain,
New Guinea, and
Mexico, all have caves deeper than
4,400 ft. ( 1,340m ).

The
Seven Natural Wonders of the World
Plus the Seven
Ancient Wonders of the World. |
The
SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD is a listing of notable objects in the world.
The practice of listing the seven
wonders begun in ancient times, when Greeks and Romans compiled lists of
memorable things that travelers should
see. There were many lists compiled that included many different
wonders, however all the lists of ancient wonders
included only man-made objects that were considered notable because of
their size or some other unusual quality.
Since that time, others - usually writers, explorers, and world
travelers - have compiled lists of the Seven Natural
Wonders. World travelers and explorers generally select the 7 natural
wonders listed below. |
